More than two years after a college girl, Kanchan Bala Jha, committed suicide driven by harassment by six people in Bihar's Sitamarhi district, a court today convicted two persons, including a girl, for abetment to suicide and acquitted four others for lack of evidence.
The Ad Hoc Additional District and Sessions Judge Md. Irshad Ali pronounced two accused Virendra Sah and Puja Kumari guilty under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) under the IPS and acquitted four other accused Gauri, Akhilesh Paswan, Bhairav Yadav and Lovely for lack of evidence against them.
The judge will pronounce the quantum of punishment on December 16.
Jha, a BSC (Maths) student of SRK Goenka College, took her own life by hanging herself at her house in Sitamarhi town on August 23, 2012 after facing harassment, blackmailing and torture by six persons, including two girls, over a long time.
The incident had rocked the nation and prompted the state government to order a probe by an IG-rank official which had indicted the district police headed by the then SP Vivek Kumar whom the 24 year-old victim had met on a number of occasions to complain about harassment by six perpetrators.
The local people, including students, had also launched a massive agitation in Sitamarhi town and burnt vehicles to protest against police inaction against harassment of the girl.
Ironically, the 24 year-old student had passed out with first division in the graduation examination the results of which were declared six months after her death.
