Ram Avtar Gupta was accosted on August 6 by two men who claimed to be police officials and asked him to remove his gold chain and bracelet and wrap it up in a paper in the wake of snatching incidents in the area, police said.
After Gupta refused to follow their instructions, the men called their another associate and forcibly removed the gold chain and bracelet following which he raised alarm. The locals then nabbed one of them named Haider on the spot, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav said.
During interrogation it was revealed that Kabir was the gang's mastermind and they robbed other people also using the same modus operandi, he said.
Kabir told the police that they would claim to be cops to influence people in removing their jewellery on the pretext of snatching incidents. They would then help them in wrapping the jewellery in paper and stealthily replace it with something else and flee before their fraud was realised by the victims, Yadav said.
The other members of the gang, who are absconding, have been identified as -- Sikander, Iqbal, Chand and Haider Ali, all residents of Nagpur. They used to target elderly persons and women by posing as police officers, he said.
