At its full commission meeting here today, the UGC, governing higher education in the country, approved the proposal for the centre, the foundation stone of which will be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his proposed visit to Varanasi on December 25, officials said.
The day is also being observed as 'Good Governance Day' to commemorate the birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The centre is expected to function as an autonomous body, the details of which will be spelled out during the Prime Minister's visit to the campus. It will be named after Madan Mohan Malviya, the officials said.
The initiative, piloted by UGC, will see setting up of 100 centres, coordinating the entire skill development efforts of higher educational institutions.
