A mathadi (headload) workers union functionary escaped unhurt after being fired upon in Rabale area of neighbouring Navi Mumbai, police said Monday.

The incident took place at around 10:45pm on Sunday, an official said.

"Aditya Kshirsagar, joint secretary of the Mathadi Workers Union was fired upon but he escaped after ducking in time. It may be a case of personal enmity," Senior Inspector Dinkar Mohite of Rabale police station said.

He said CCTV images from the vicinity were being checked to apprehend the accused, adding that a case of attempt to murder had been registered.
