Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today failed to make it to the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas event in Gujarat, where removal of his posters has led to strains between the two state governments.
Yadav's aircraft could not take off due to bad weather this morning, but hours later ruling Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav said party workers were unhappy over the manner in which posters and hoardings of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav were removed in the BJP-ruled state.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi goes about talking proudly about his Gujarati identity but his supporters there have removed the posters of the chief minister of the biggest state...," he told reporters in Etawah.
"This action of Modi's supporters has saddened and angered the workers and supporters of Akhilesh Yadav," the SP MP said.
Yadav was to address a special session of the PBD today and also interact with prominent NRIs and ask them to invest in his state.
He was scheduled to fly from Saifai in Etawah after attending the 'Saifai Mahotsav' which ended last night. But, due to dense fog, he could not proceed to Gujarat and instead returned to the state capital, officials said here.
UP Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan and Principal Secretary (Information) Navneet Sehgal are among senior state government officials attending the meet in Gandhinagar.
Uttar Pradesh officials had lodged a protest with the Gujarat government over removal of 'UP Rising' posters and hoardings put up on the route from Ahmadabad airport to Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas venue, while describing the move as "illegal".
Samajwadi Party had dubbed the move as "undemocratic and unjustified".
