"Cost of agriculture is increasing continuously and cost of cane production is around Rs 290 to Rs 300 per quintal," BJP state president Laxmi Kant Bajpai said in a statement here.
He demanded that cane farmers be paid at the rate of minimum Rs 350 per quintal.
Reminding SP that in its election manifesto the party had promised to fix the cost of produce on the basis of cost of production, Bajpai said "but no hike in the SAP as announced today, the UP government has done gross injustice with the farmers and BJP will oppose it at all level."
In a cabinet meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, it was decided to maintain the SAP of early ripening variety of sugarcane at Rs 290 per quintal, normal variety at Rs 280 and late variety at Rs 275, which were same as last season, Principal Secretary of cane development department Rahul Bhatnagar said.
