UP jail inmates go on rampage after convict found dead

Agitated over death of a convict, inmates in the district jail here went on a rampage inside the campus and attempted to attack the Jail Superintendent forcing police to use canes to control them, a senior officer said today.
Hari Om (40), who was serving life sentence in a dowry-cum-murder case, allegedly committed suicide and his body was found inside the toilet of a barrack late last night under suspicious circumstances, IG (Law and Order) A Satish Ganesh said in Lucknow.
Agitated over the incident, the inmates attempted to attack the Jail Superintendent, District Magistrate Anuj Kumar Jha said.
Additional force from several police stations was rushed to the jail and police used canes to bring the situation under control and rescue jail officials, whom the inmates tried to attack.

The situation turned serious when Additional District Magistrate Ramesh Chandra Yadav and Superintendent of Police Kalanidhi rushed to pacify the agitated inmates.
Jha said the body of the inmate was handed over to his family after post-mortem.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered, he said.
Jha said a letter to carry out a probe has also been sent to the Chief Judicial Magistrate.
He said the DIG (Prison) visited the jail and took stock of the situation.
