US reaffirms security ties with Pakistan

The US today "reaffirmed" the importance of its security relationship with Pakistan for regional stability and said it will continue to work together to build a stronger partnership.
These remarks were made during US Navy's Operations chief Admiral Jonathan Greenert's visit to Pakistan during which he met with the top leadership here.
"Admiral Greenert and Prime Minister (Nawaz) Sharif reaffirmed the importance of the US-Pakistani security relationship to regional stability and agreed to continue to work together in order to build a stronger partnership and further common objectives," a statement released by US Embassy here said.
Admiral Greenert held discussions on a wide range of common security issues with Prime Minister Sharif, Army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt, and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Asif Sandila, along with other senior military officials.

US assistance to Pakistan continues to help build the counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism capabilities of the country's security forces, which are critical to countering violence in the western border regions, the statement said.
Since 2002, Pakistan has received more than USD 16 billion of security assistance and reimbursements.
"Pakistan's determined effort to root out terrorism and militancy on its own territory is essential for creating a stable environment for promoting economic growth and prosperity," the official statement said.
