US welcomes meeting between leaders of China and Taiwan

The US has welcomed the historic meeting between the leaders of China and Taiwan, saying it encourages the two sides to build ties, reduce tensions and promote stability in the region on the basis of dignity.
"The US welcomes the meeting between leaders on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and the historic improvement in cross-Strait relations in recent years," State Department spokesman John Kirby said.
"The US has a deep and abiding interest in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and we encourage further progress by both sides toward building ties, reducing tensions, and promoting stability on the basis of dignity and respect," he said.

The US remains committed to its oneChinapolicy, based on the Three Joint Communiques and the Taiwan Relations Act, Kirby said.
The presidents of China and Taiwan met and held their talks in Singapore in scenes considered unthinkable until recently.
