MDMK Chief Vaiko is observing a dawn-to-dusk "Maun Vrat" in his cell at Puzhal Central Jail here, in memory of his late father Vaiyapuri.
He has been silent since six am and has not taken even water, MDMK sources claimed.
He will continue to be so till six in the evening, sources told PTI.
Vaiko's father passed away on April 5, 1973 and he has been continuing the practice of observing silence every year since then.
