Commuting along the Outer Ring Road will get easier with the Delhi government all set to throw open to the public the 3.40 km elevated corridor between Vikaspuri and Meerabagh today.
The AAP government claims that it saved Rs 110 crore in the project.
The corridor, which will be thrown open by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal this evening, will make five intersections on the stretch signal-free following which those travelling through Jankapuri, Vikaspuri, Tilak Nagar, Jawalaheri, Pachim Vihar will benefit the most.
Yesterday, former Congress MP Mahabal Mishra and his supporters had "forcefully" opened the elevated corridor between Vikaspuri and Meera Bagh, prompting PWD to file a police complaint.
In a statement, the former West Delhi MP had claimed that he along with hundreds of party workers inaugurated the 3.4-km long flyover from Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh as the Congress party has allotted funds for its construction.
The Vikaspuri-Meerabagh elevated project, another part of the 22 km signal-free Vikaspur-Wazirabad elevated road corridor being executed by the Public Works Department (PWD), is equipped with a rain water harvesting system.
In a first, the elevated corridor has been supported on a three meter wide single pier.
"The sanctioned cost of the Vikaspuri-Meerabagh elevated road was Rs 559.60 crore, but it has been built at a cost of Rs 450 crore following which the PWD has saved Rs 110 crore in this project which was started in February 2013," said a senior government official.
"At least 12 minutes will be saved while commuting through this stretch after construction of the Vikaspuri-Meerabagh elevated road. The cost of the project will be recovered in less than three years by saving time in terms of fuel saving," said a senior government official.
Five intersections which will become signal free are Anand Kunj T-junction, Manohar Nagar Crossing, Keshopur crossing, Sabji Mandi T-junction and Meera Bagh T-junction.
In the construction of eight-lane Bhalswa Flyover, a section of Vikaspuri-Wazirabad road project, the PWD had saved Rs 20 crore while the agency had saved Rs 15 crore in the construction of Burari flyover.
