A meeting was called today by the Sambalpur district administration in Odisha with staff and student representatives of VIMSAR, Burla to resolve the ongoing unrest over transfer of faculty members.
Sambalpur district Collector Samarth Verma convened the meeting after students gheraoed the superintendent of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) on the issue and called a bandh across Burla to protest the transfer of faculty members of the institute to other medical colleges.
They had also given a 72-hour ultimatum yesterday and had threatened to go on cease work if the transfer order was not cancelled.
Verma said the talks were fruitful and the students have agreed to discuss about their agitation in their general body meeting.
Convener of the joint committee of Under Graduate Students' Union, House Surgeon Association and Post Graduate Students' Association of VIMSAR, Sankar Ramchandani said the Collector has assured them that steps would be taken to replace the doctors who were transferred from VIMSAR within two months.
The DC also assured that the five doctors, who have been transferred despite showing interest to work in VIMSAR, would be brought back within two months, he said.
"A decision on whether to proceed on a cease work will be taken in the general body meeting," Ramchandani said.
Dean and Principal of VIMSAR, B K Dutta said the institution was already reeling under staff shortage.
"A discussion regarding the transfer of doctors was held here. We are hopeful that we will get some result," he said adding, an advertisement regarding appointment of 54 doctors at VIMSAR has also been issued.
