Water supply in east and south Delhi, which was affected for the last two days, is likely to be restored by tomorrow morning.
Supply to these areas was interrupted due to suspension of operations at the Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar treatment plants owing to high levels of ammonia in the Yamuna river.
Greater Kailash MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj said that supply remained affected throughout today in south Delhi, but the situation will improve by tomorrow as the Delhi Jal Board is planning to resume supply in a phase-wise manner.
"Water has started reaching GK (Greater Kailash). Tomorrow morning, areas like GK-II, C R Park, Alakananda will receive water.
"Chirag Delhi, Khirki Extension, Savitri Extension, Shekh Sarai, GK-I and East of Kailash will also receive water, but it will be a little delayed. Around 80 per cent supply will be restored by morning," he said.
The two plants can treat 250 MGD (million gallons per day) and about 900 MGD water is processed in Delhi, a majority of which is done at nine treatment facilities.
The Board had recently announced lifting of raw water from the Yamuna intake due to the closure of the Upper Ganga Canal, from where these plants used to source their water.
But it got affected due to the presence of high level of ammonia in Yamuna.
"High content of ammonia has been found in raw water lifted from Yamuna, therefore the Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar WTP have been closed due to which most of the areas of south Delhi and east Delhi shall be affected for two days," the DJB said in a statement.
Yamuna Vihar, Loni Road, Mandawali, Greater Kailash, Vasant Kunj, Sarita Vihar and Giri Nagar were among the areas which were affected due to the shortage of water supply.
