WB Traffic Police takes steps to cut down road accidents

The West Bengal traffic police has decided to implement several steps like setting up of road-side assistance booth and installing CCTVs to cut down on the rising number of accidents on national and state highways.
State DGP Surajit Kar Purakayastha held a meeting with around seven SPs and Asansol City Police Commissioner in Durgapur yesterday and took the decision to implement police assistance booth at crucial points of national highways passing through West Bengal as well highways controlled by the state.
"The steps have been taken by the state police eyeing to control the growing number of accidents on the national and state highways. These decisions have already been implemented in the state from today," a senior official present in the meeting told PTI.

Three booths on three crucial points (Pulsit, Galsi and Kansa) on National Highway passing through Burdwan, two points on the highway passing through Birbhum district, and one in East Midnapore have started operating this morning, he said.
"These assistance booths will operate from 6Pm to 6PM and keep a check on the traffic movements on the highways. They will also be equipped with breath analyser to check whether drivers were driving consuming alcohol. CCTVs will also be there at the booths," he said.
This type of arrangements were not there in rural Bengal but what has been planned would help the state police not only to control accidentals events on highways but also to keep a look at crimes there, the IPS officer said.

In fact, the state police was also thinking of installing CCTVs on all the national and state highways in the state.
"We are thinking on brining all the national and state highways under the lens. But that will be done gradually," he said.
