Woman governor of remote Afghan province reappointed

An Afghan official says one of the country's few women in public office has been removed from her post as a provincial governor after months of pressure and threats.
Nadir Yama, deputy policy director of the Independent Directorate of Local Governance, today said that Seema Jowenda, formerly governor of Ghor province, has been appointed deputy governor of Kabul province, effective immediately.
Jowenda became one of just two women provincial governors when she was appointed in June by President Ashraf Ghani.
Her appointment prompted protests and death threats, faced by many working women in Afghanistan.
Recently, Ghor, one of Afghanistan's poorest and least developed provinces, has been the scene of gruesome killings of women accused of "adultery," including one who was stoned to death by a group of men.
