The hinge of the door connecting it to the wall had rotten, causing the crash. Vibration caused by the vehicular movement, tar from the road and water-logging also caused some damage, an ASI official said.
"We have inspected the damage and have informed the ASI head office at Vadodara. We expect visit by our senior officials in few days," the official said.
After the incident, traffic through the Darwaja arches was stopped by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials for restoration work.
Made of iron-plated timber, Kalupur Darwaja is 27-feet-high and has slits through which guns could be fired from inside.
Though the fort wall enclosing the old Ahmedabad city is mostly in ruins or removed in most places, the entry gates still stand.
Dilip Gor, Deputy municipal commissioner and head of the civic body's heritage department said since the ASI looks after the Darwaja, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has informed its officials about the incident.
