A workshop today reviewed the current status of registration of births and deaths across the country and discussed ways and means of improving the current level of registration to 100 per cent by 2020.
The rate of registration at present stands at 83.5 per cent for births and 67.5 per cent for deaths in the country.
The workshop, organised by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, was addressed by Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami.
In his address, Goswami called upon all stakeholders to work towards achieving the national vision of universal civil registration by 2020.
The workshop was attended by the Chief Registrars of Births and Deaths from all states and Union Territories along with the principal secretaries and secretaries overseeing the said work.
The deliberations at the workshop would help strengthen the system of Civil Registration with a view to achieving the target of universal registration by 2020, an official release said.
A web-based application on uniform civil registration that would cover registration of births and deaths and generate tables was demonstrated along with a SMS-based application for monitoring the reporting of events by medical institutions.
Representatives of central ministries concerned along with those from UNICEF and UNFPA and officials of the Directorates of Census Operations (DCO) in states and Union Territories and of the Registrar General, India, took part in the workshop.
