Youth climbs water tank in support of Sikh activist's demand

A 25-year-old man climbed atop a water tank at Hasanpur area today and threatened to commit suicide against the detention of 80-year-old Sikh activist Surat Singh Khalsa here.
Amritpal Singh of Barnala district, who serves as priest in a Gurudwara, was coaxed to come down by the police and civil administration officials but in vain. The youth had attempted a similar act two days ago.
The activist had been sitting on fast unto death here for three days demanding release of Sikh detainees lodged in various jails of the country who have completed their sentences.
Khalsa was shifted to a hospital here by the police owing to his deteriorating health condition.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had constituted a high-level committee, over a week ago, to ensure timely resolution of pending matters related to Sikh prisoners within the ambit of existing rules and regulations.
The committee has been mandated to examine such specific cases meticulously so as to ensure timely release of these prisoners lodged in different jails of Punjab and outside the state.
