At the launch of Mumbai unit's Youth Congress membership drive, Kamat said he has been associated with the party for 40 years, since his student days.

"Along with me there were several Youth Congress activists who worked at different levels in the party organisation before becoming an MLA, MP or minister. Today, several youth leaders are in prominent positions in the party and government," Kamat, who has held posts of Maharashtra Youth Congress and Indian Youth Congress president, said.

Rahul Gandhi's concept of internal democracy in the Youth Congress has worked, he said. "With the second round of membership drive being undertaken, it has been proved that this transformation process is sustainable," he added.

Mumbai unit Youth Congress chief, Sadaf Aboli said 2.17 lakh members were brought into the fold in 2010. "This year the membership drive will continue till June 16," he said.

Later, Kamat told reporters that the Mumbai unit president of Congress will be appointed soon. "We will have a president who is dedicated to Congress ideology and not one who belongs to a particular group, faction or Marathi or non-Marathi," he said.

Kamat, who was the city unit chief from 2003-07, said he has already ruled himself out for a second term.
