While convicting Arif for the offence of robbery and for obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty, the court observed that it was unfortunate that the complainant, who had come to Delhi to earn his livelihood from West Bengal, was robbed and deprived of his hard-earned money.
Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Sharma said it was also a matter of concern that one of the two robbers amputated left index finger of the cop who responded to his call of duty.
The court convicted Arif for committing offences under section 392 (robbery), 397 (robbery with attempt to cause grievous hurt), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant) and other sections of IPC and Arms Act.
The court will pronounce later the quantum of sentence to be awarded to Arif.
According to the prosecution, on November 26, 2007, when complainant Sahalum Mulla, a resident of West Bengal and engaged in trading of embroidery clothes, was going to Old Delhi railway station to board a train, the two youths stopped him.
Two policemen, head constable Nafis and constable Narender, heared Mulla's shout for help and chased down the robbers and Arif was caught.
However, during the scuffle, Arif chewed the index finger of Nafis who, however, refused to let him go while Imran managed to flee from the spot, the police had said.
