The decision to fit speed governors on Delhis public buses will go a long way towards lowering the hazard of unskilled driving. As a long-term measure, it is worth considering whether public transport buses should have low performance engines and transmission so that an over-specified engine does not need to be constrained artificially. This may enable lightening of the chassis as well.
The result will be peak performance from downgraded equipment and consequential lower running and capital costs.
Manufacturers of buses will find it worth developing special engines and related equipment for city buses if all city transport agencies in the country adopt this pattern.
