The government has fixed a target of generating 930,000 million units of electricity by the end of this month, Parliament was informed today.

"Generational targets from various conventional sources for the current financial year 2012-13 has been fixed as 930,000 million units," Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.

The term megawatt (MW) refers to the capacity of a generating station, the actual generation from a generating station is expressed in million unit (MU).

Generation targets are fixed on year to year basis. The gross electricity generation in the country from various conventional energy sources during April 2012-January 2013 is 762,766 million units as against the target of 771,866 million units.

This generation is mainly from thermal, hydro and nuclear sources and import of hydro power from Bhutan during 2012-13.

Nuclear power registered a generation of 27,450 million units as compared to the target of 35,200 million units.

"The less generation in nuclear is due to delay in commissioning of Kudankulam nuclear power plant," Scindia said.

The hydro power generation during the period was 99,071 million units as against the target of 122,045 million units.

India imported 4,710 million units of hydro power from Bhutan against the target of 5,480 million units.

"Less generation in hydro including import from Bhutan is due to poor monsoon in Southern, Eastern and North-Eastern regions," he said.

The country recorded thermal power generation of 6,31,437 million units compared to 767,275 million units.
