The surface transport ministry has sanctioned Mumbai-based ABG Industries project to construct two multi-purpose bulk cargo berths at Mormugao port on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis.
Ministry sources said that the project cost is estimated at Rs 200 crore, which was approved on Tuesday. The concession period is 30 years.
ABG Industries has undertaken to give a guaranteed income of about Rs 30.75 crore to the port. The work has been allotted on the basis of pre-qualifying competitive bidding, in which nine bidders had participated. Seven bidders were selected at the pre-qualified stage.
At present, Momugao port has six operational berths, of which one handles petroleum oil lubricants, another iron ore and four others handle general cargo. The port has a draft of 13.7 metres.
It handled 17.36 million tonnes of cargo in 1996-97, a bulk of which constituted iron ore. With the addition of two multi-purpose berths, the ports cargo handling capacity is expected to go up substantially.
After Jawaharlal Nehru Ports container terminal project, this is the second major port to be constructed on BOT basis.
