Among the first of multipronged strategy of HUDCO is to come up with some unique schemes talior-made to suit the nVeds of a tragedy of the size of Orissa cyclone.To satisfy this very need, as of now HUDCO has received two schemes from the state government and both have been approved. The two schemes together have a total outlay of Rs. 222-34 crores of which Rs.187.50 crores will come as a loan assistance from HUDCO in the 12 cyclone hit districts of Orissa. These schemes will take up the construction of a total of 75,000 units of houses for economically weaker sections. These schemes have been sanctioned with the usual concessional rates of 10% (net) for the EWS category, with a repayment of 15 years.
Next in the line is HUDCO's assistance for setting up of special building centres. (Normithi Kendra /Nirman Kendra) for technology transfer and for training the local artisans on appropriate technologies for disaster resistant housing. HUDCO is extending assistance for establishment of 5 special building centres in the cyclone affected areas with a grant of upto Rs 15 lakh each, totaling upto Rs 0.75 crores. Infact this is to show that it is entirely possible to construct disaster proof structures with the locally available construct
