India Moves Wto Against Us Duties

India has moved the World Trade Organisation against the US for imposing anti-dumping duty on import of steel from India.

Commerce ministry sources said that the complaint, which was filed last week has been accepted by the WTO.

Sources added that the case is at present in the first stage of the dispute settlement mechanism (DSM) which means the WTO will ask for consultations between the affected parties.

If the issue is not sorted out, then in the next stage arbitration proceedings will be initiated by the WTO.

The filing of the complaint is significant as the case for greater market access to the US for the Indian steel industry was taken up by the prime minister himself along with textiles, during his trip to the US last month.

The filing of the complaint means that the talks obviously did not yield any result even though the steel minister Braja Kishore Tripathi held consultations with the domestic steel manufacturers prior to Vajpayee
