Tata Iron and Steel Company Ltd managing director Jamshed J Irani has joined the Tata Sons board as a director with effect from June 19. Tata Sons, chaired by Ratan Tata, is the promoter company of the diversified Tata group and has a 15 per cent holding in Tata Steel.

Irani served as the national president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 1992-93 and is currently co-chairman of the Indo-British Partnership Initiative. He is also a director on the board of the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI), Brussels. Irani has also been involved in the working groups for iron and steel for the sixth, seventh and eighth five-year plans.

Irani began his career with Tata Steel in 1968 as assistant director, research and development. He became a deputy managing director in 1981 and took over as Tata Steels managing director in 1992.

Apart from Tata Steel, Irani is a director on the boards of 16 companies, including Tata Sons Ltd, Tata Industries Ltd, Telco, Tata Exports and BOC India Ltd.
