LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Amongst non-BJP probables for Prime Minister, Jyoti Basu is an honourable man; the nation could do worse than having him as head of a coalition government. Yet, the way a communist is being insinuated into the list, coupled with the back-seat drivers role played by the CPI(M) General Secretary throughout the UF regime, calls to mind the East European experience following the end of the World War. Like the proverbial Arab ka Oont, the communists started with a toe-hold on the State apparatus and ended up taking full possession of it, eliminating everyone else. The Basus and Surjeets of that scenario proved to be children of the revolution who satiated the gastronomic needs of the revolution. Neither the script nor the menu of the silent revolution that seems to be in the offing in our country is likely to be different.
