Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) is planning to start mobile telephony services in Delhi and Mumbai, the two cities in which it operates basic telecom and data services. MTNL chairman and managing director N Rajagopalan said the public sector undertaking was hoping to operationalise the service under a joint venture in a years time.

The Japanese personal communications service technologies which operate on the 1.9 giga hertz frequency band and code division multiple access (CDMA)-based systems. were under study.
