Business schools are in for a good placement season. Pre-placement talks had begun and this season would be promising, the schools said.

After summer internships, pre-placement offers begin trickling in at business schools from August-September and continue till the end of the year.

Schools said they expected a 10-15 per cent increase in stipends. At many schools last year the highest stipend offered was Rs 1.2 lakh.

Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, has received 31 pre-placement offers and is expecting the number to go up to 80. Last year, it had received 51 pre-placement offers.

“We are expecting a good response this year with e-commerce firms and investment banks offering jobs through the pre-placement route,” said Kanwal Kapil, chairperson, placements, at Management Development Institute.

Kapil said a large number of offers were made by e-commerce firms Flipkart and Snapdeal last year. Vishal Goyal, placements head at IMT Ghaziabad, said though summer internships had just come to an end and many companies were yet to conduct their final offer-making process, the institute had already bagged 10 pre-placement offers.  He added the average stipend was better than last year, owing to a surge in new analytics, e-commerce, market research and consulting companies.

Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai received 54 offers, compared with 40 at the same time last year. Around 25 more are awaiting formal communication over the next few days. The institute expects 130 more such offers, mainly from financial, consumer goods, information technology, and consulting companies.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are also receiving pre-placement offers. The recruitment chairperson in one of the IIMs said while the numbers would be known by the end of September, on current trends e-commerce would be the second largest sector in terms of offers after consulting.

He added technology-based startups had expressed interest in hiring from campus and were offering packages almost on a par as larger companies.

The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, said it expected more pre-placement offers than last year. Sapna Agarwal, head, career development cell, IIM Bangalore, said pre-placement talks had begun. “We received 137 offers last year and we expect the number to climb,” she said.
