CAT 2015 to have three sections; exam duration increased to 180 minutes

The Indian Institutes  of Management (IIMs) have announced the registration for Common  Admission Test (CAT) 2015.

This year’s CAT will have three sections compared to two sections last year. Further, the test will be held on a single day.

Last year, the two sections were quantitative aptitude & data interpretation, and verbal ability & logical reasoning.

Tathagata Bandyopadhyay, convener, CAT 2015, IIM Ahmedabad said CAT this year will be conducted in two sessions in one day.  It will be held on November 29.

The exam will be conducted in 136 cities comprising 650 test sites. Candidates will be given the  option to  select four test cities  in  order of preference.

There will be  three sections, quantitative aptitude (QA), data interpretation &  logical reasoning (DILR), and verbal & reading  comprehension  (VRC). QA and VRC will have 34 questions each, and DILR will  have 32 questions.

Bandyopadhyay said they will try their best to assign candidates, their first preferred city. If not possible, they will be  assigned a city  following  their given order of preference. However, candidates will  not be able to select the session  because it will be assigned randomly.

The duration of the examination has  been increased to  180  minutes from 170 minutes. Students will also be required to type out the answers.

Bandyopadhyay said some  questions  in  each  section might  not  be of multiple choice type.  Instead, direct answers are to be typed on the screen. Use of basic on-screen calculator for computation will be allowed.

Candidates will be allotted 60 minutes for answering questions in each section and they would not be able to switch from one section to another.

The tutorial to understand the format of the examination will be available on the CAT website from October 15.
