Private sector participation in the power sector is essential and such participation would increase in the next 10 to 15 years, the joint secretary, ministry of power, P K Basu said yesterday.
Speaking at the interactive meeting on Private sector participation in transmission and distribution, organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci), Basu said that the total regulatory system in the country would be changed. The power ministry was seriously considering adopting the independent regulatory authority (IRA) method, he added. He conceded that the poor performance of the state electricity boards has made reforms in the power sector essential.
He revealed that the power ministry was planning to simplify the bidding route by considering the price per kilo watt instead of calculating the total cost of a project, which has been done till now.
