Sugarcane production in Punjab is likely to fall by 48 lakh tonnes this season.
According to estimates prepared by the state cane commissioner, the state is expected to produce 90 lakh tonnes of sugar cane.
Last year, Punjab had produced 138 lakh tonnes of sugarcane. The main reason for the drastic fall this year is the huge decline in the area under cultivation by over 85,000 hectares. Last year, the area under sugarcane cultivation totalled 2.35 lakh hectares and the area this year, has been reduced to just 1.50 lakh hectares.
