Pivotals closed marginally lower on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday due to speculative selling pressure and lack of buying support from institutional investors.

Mirroring the trend, the NSE-50 index opened at 1054.60, touched the days high of 1063.00, declined to a low of 1048.05, and closed at 1053.35, showing a net loss of 0.70 points over the previous close of 1054.05. However, the Midcap index closed higher by 3.34 points to 1128.84 against the previous close of 1125.50.

The State Bank of India scrip topped the turnover list registering Rs 313.75 crore, followed by ITC Rs 186.97 crore, Reliance Rs 91.79 crore, Bank of India Rs 47.88 crore and ACC Rs 37.75 crore. Hectic activity was also seen in Tisco Rs 37.73 crore, Hind Lever Rs 22.23 crore, Telco Rs 20.97 crore, MTNL Rs 17.95 crore, Bajaj Auto Rs 17.16 crore, BSES Rs 13.91 crore, L&T Rs 12.59 crore, ICICI Rs 10.92 crore, OBC Rs 10.04 crore, Bata Rs 8.92 crore, Bhel Rs 8.75 crore, BoB Rs 6 PD up Rs 7.38 crore, HDFC Bank Rs 6.74 crore, Hind Petro Rs 5.17 crore, Cochin Refin Rs 3.83 crore, M&M Rs 3.79 crore, BEML Rs 3.69 crore, Indian Rayon Rs 3.66 crore, IPCL Rs 3.54 crore and Federal Bank Rs 2.84 crore.

The top five gainers were Cochin Refineries, HLL, ICICI, Ranbaxy Lab and Andhra Valley Power. The top five losers were Bajaj Auto, Indian Rayon, IPCL, Essar Steel and ACC.

Meanwhile, share prices further declined on the Over the Counter Exchange of India (Otcei) due to lack of buying support from investors. The composite index opened at 82.77 and closed at 82.60, showing a decrease of 0.41 per cent over its previous close of 83.01.

The total turnover was Rs 39.23 lakh involving 59,978 shares and debentures. Major contribution was from the listed debentures contributing Rs 23.96 lakh (2,178 debentures). Among the other segments listed equity contributed Rs 15.26 lakh (57,800 shares). In listed equities active trading was witnessed in IIF Info Tech where 42.40 shares were traded valuing 14.46 lakh.
