These Web serving results demonstrate that Silicon Graphics CC-NUMA-based Origin servers are the industry price/performance leader across all classes of multi-processor systems with an Origin 200 QC four-processor system beating an eight-processor Sun Ultra Enterprise in overall Web serving performance, at less that one-half of the price, running Netscape Communications server software.

These substantial performance enhancements were achieved through the combination of performance enhancements Silicon Graphics made to the source code of netscape server software, licensed from Netscape, optimisations to the Silicon Graphics IRIX operating system and improved caching on the Origin server platform.

Achieving an initial objective of the Everest Initiative, Silicon Graphics and Netscape have created the highest performing Web servers running real-world applications based on Netscapes high performance and scaleable Web server software. A key component of the Everest initiative is a combined engineering effort between Silicon Graphics and Netscape to develop web serving solutions to meet the performance, scaleabiity and functionality needs of todays internet service providers and large scale Web supersites. By delivering on his Everest Initiative goal, Silicon Graphics allows its customers to deploy high traffic, demanding websites using fewer servers and at a lower cost.
