India yesterday successfully test-fired the short-range triple-role Trishul missile with the capability of being used as both surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missile.
The missile, being developed by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), was test-fired at around 1 pm at the interim test-range at Chandipur near here, official sources said. The missile, with a 50-km range, has an added use for the Navy. The trial yesterday was carried out by the Army to test its surface-to-surface capabilities, the sources said.
The Trishul, first test-fired in 1983, is among the five missiles being developed by the DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).
The Trishul uses the radar line of a sight guidance device and is powered by a two-stage solid propellant system, the sources said. The missile, with a 50 km range, is being developed as a surface-to-surface and surface-to-air weapon with added use for the Navy.
