Work at the Pal-Peugeot unit at Kalyan near here resumed with employees reporting for duty a few hours after sudden cessation of work on February 1.

The flash strike at the Kalyan plant, led by Kamgar Aghadi, was reportedly sparked off following deduction of Rs 200 from the bonus paid to the staffers towards union dues. Company sources said that the strike lasted for a few hours only and the plant had since then returned to normal.

Operations at the Premier Automobiles' Kurla plant has not been affected by the Friday's development at the Kalyan works. Activity at Kurla is going on smoothly, sources said.

The company top brass could not be contacted for comments on the issue with managing director J M Vakil was away at Madras and Maitreya Doshi abroad.

The newly elected Kamgar Aghadi leader Dada Samant could not be reached for comments either since he was away holding election meetings.

Trouble had reportedly been brewing at the Kalyan unit for some time over the removal of some dies and moulds from the factory premises by the management during the three-day plant closure between January 24-26.

The removal of the machinery had reduced production at the plant, thereby causing a loss of Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 in the wage incentive to workers.

The striking workers had also demanded that the 22 suspended workers including Kamgar Aghadi leaders be reinstated.
