The bonding that developed between the players during their 16-month stay at a camp in Bengaluru, mostly in isolation, ahead of the ongoing Olympics played an instrumental role in the Indian men's hockey team's bronze medal-winning feat here after 41 years, feels vice-captain Harmanpreet Singh.
The side claimed an Olympic medal for the first time since the 1980 gold, defeating Germany 5-4 in an edge-of-the-seat bronze play-off match.
"It's a nostalgic moment for us. It's a special moment for every Indian. It's a big achievement. We have made a lot of sacrifices but our focus was on being mentally stronger. In the last 16 months we lived as a family in Bengaluru," said Harmanpreet, who converted a penalty corner for India against Germany.
"We were completely shut from the outside world. We were just focussed on our job."
"It's a result of the process. The coach just boosted our confidence and told us to play our own hockey and believe in our hardwork. All the players just did that and we achieved what we desired," Harmanpreet said.
"The women's team has achieved a phenomenal feat. They have already made the country proud. We will definitely go there to support for them tomorrow," he said.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday announced a reward of Rs one crore each for hockey players Vivek Sagar and Nilakanta Sharma, who were a part of the Indian squad that won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Sagar hails from Shivnagar Chandon village in Itrasi tehsil of MP's Hoshangabad district, while Sharma underwent training at the Bhopal-based Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy.
The Indian men's hockey team has defeated the best teams in the world in the Tokyo Olympics, an official said quoting Chouhan.
The Madhya Pradesh government will give Samman Nidhi of Rs one crore each to both of them, the CM said.

He endured the pain of returning empty handed from the Olympics four times during his playing days but the legendary Dhanraj Pillay says now he has no regrets after watching the Indian hockey team claim a bronze at the Tokyo Games.
The eight-time former gold-winners, who battled a heartbreaking slump in the last four decades, scripted history at Tokyo by securing an Olympic medal -- a bronze -- after 41 years.
The last time India had won an Olympic medal in hockey was at the 1980 Moscow Games where they bagged the gold.
On Thursday, India brought an end to the medal jinx after getting the better of the Germans in a thrilling 5-4 win in the bronze medal play off.
"I always had the regret that I could not win an Olympic medal. I used to wonder whether I would be able to see India at the Olympic podium again in hockey. Now with this historic win, I have no regrets," the former captain told PTI.
"You always go to the Olympics to win a medal and your morale is broken when you end up playing classification matches," said Pillay, who is the only Indian to represent India in four Olympic Games (1992 to 2004) and as many World Cups and Champion Trophies in a career spanning over 15 years.
The Indians showed great determination as they made a memorable comeback, fighting back from a two-goal deficit to turn the match in their favour after being 1-3 down thanks to some defensive lapses.
"I must appreciate this team for the way they have managed a comeback after the heartbreaking defeat against Belgium," said the 53-year-old.

Asian record-holding shot Putter Tajinder Pal Singh Toor, who failed to qualify for the finals in the Olympics with a disappointing performance, on Thursday said he was competing with a wrist injury in his throwing arm which would require a surgery now.
Asian record holder Toor could only manage one legal throw of 19.99m, in his first attempt, to finish 13th in Group A qualification and 24th overall.
"I intended to enhance my personal best and not wanted to be just a participant, but I could not give my best at the Olympics," Toor, who had competed with a heavily bandaged shoulder, wrote in an Instagram post which shows a bandaged left wrist.
"I have been suffering from revival of my wrist injury since just after my Olympic qualification in India. Still I was trying to avoid it but could not overcome."
Toor said he's going for surgery on the injured wrist. He throws with his left hand.
