IBM Global Services India today announced the opening of its global delivery centre in Hyderabad, the fifth such facility set up by the company in the country.

Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, along with the company's Asia heads, attended the inaugural function at the centre's sprawling campus at Mindspace Software Technology Park.

The Hyderabad centre will initially employ 1,000 staff with a capacity to grow in line with client demand, enabling IBM to scale delivery of its application management services (AMS) according to market needs.

Speaking on the occasion, Reddy termed IBM's presence in the city as an important landmark on the state's IT horizon.

He explained the government's efforts in providing modern infrastructure facilities in and around Hyderabad and other places in the state besides the proactive support to the IT sector. Reddy also invited IBM to extend its operations to the Port City of Vizag.

Frank Kern, vice-president, Asia Pacific operations, said, "The growing markets, huge support base and talent available in India make us committed to this great nation. In the last couple of years, IBM's business in India has grown by 49 per cent."

According to him, IBM now employs around 23,000 professionals across India.

Shankar Annaswamy, managing director, IBM India, said the company's Hyderabad centre would provide clients around the world with technology services and solutions in the area of application development and management.

The Hyderabad centre will focus on designing, building, running, transforming, enhancing, and supporting clients' business applications, especially on SAP, mainframe and web technologies.
