"Companies need to put in place security controls as the data or images that are coming in or going out from an enterprise network affects its reputation, efficiency and profits," Mike Hibbert, director, Middle East, Africa and emerging markets, Marshal Limited, said at a seminar on enterprise network security management.
Marshal is a global player in secure integrated e-mail and Internet management. RAS Infotech Limited represents Marshal in India.
Explaining the cost implications of improper network security, Hibbert said that a bank is learnt to have got 93 per cent of its incoming mail as spam.
Around 27 per cent of Fortune 500 companies are learnt to have been sued due to contents of their e-mail and Chevron had to pay four women employees $2.2 million to settle a lawsuit resulting from a spam e-mail titled '25 reasons why beer is better than women', he added.
"That is why a company needs to ensure that it controls the entry of spam, spyware, malicious code, inappropriate websites and bandwidth restrictive downloads in its network while restricting the outgo of intellectual property, confidential documents, offensive content and customer information to outsiders," he added.
Khazi Mohamed Akram, general manager of RAS Infotech for Middle East and Africa operations, said that spam or unsolicited commercial e-mail cost $730 a year due to lost productivity for every employee.
