IT firm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), today announced the consolidation of its operations in Uruguay and Argentina into a single unit focused on providing nearshore services to other Latin American countries as well as the United States and Europe.

The operations will be headed by Mario Tucci, who was previously heading TCS' Andean country operations. The unit which employs over 850 professionals will scale up to 1,200 by the end of this year.

The consolidated operations will comprise of a Global Delivery Centre and a regional training centre in Montevideo (Uruguay), as well as an extension centre in Buenos Aires (Argentina). TCS plans a major expansion of this unit in the future.

The company has also announced that it will be expanding its infrastructure by setting up a new building for over 400 professionals to be inaugurated in Montevideo in November.

"This region has very highly trained human resources, English language skills and an attractive cost structure, which makes it a natural base for exporting services to other countries. Leveraging these conditions, we intend to grow to 1,200 employees this year and double our employee and client base over the next 2-3 years," said Mario Tucci, country manager designate for Uruguay and Argentina.

In the financial year April '06 - March '07, the Global Delivery Centre in Montevideo exported services worth over $30 million to clients across the world including Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Chile, the US and parts of Europe, making it the primary IT services exporter in Uruguay.

Gabriel Rozman, president, TCS Iberoamerica, said, "We have already trained over 200 professionals and expect to train over 3,000 professionals at the centre in Montevideo in the next 4 years, initiating them into TCS' successful high quality and process methodologies. This will be the fuel for our growth both in local Latin American markets and as a major nearshore provider to clients in the US."
