Tensilica, a California-based optimised application specific processor solutions provider, on Thursday announced it will invest $40 million in its design centre, set up in Pune in December 2004, over the next five years.

Chris Rowen, president and CEO of Tensilica said that the design centre in India played a key role in the company's core R&D work. "India is very important to us because of the wealth of talent that is available here and we are going to invest heavily in India in key R&D activities," Rowen added.

Subodh Shukla, who heads Tensilica India said that the company was going to recruit 50 engineers in the present year as a commitment to its growth strategy.

The Indian design centre was presently undertaking a significant portion of Tensilica's R&D activity. Last year, one-third of the company's R&D work was done here.

The design centre focusses on the development of integrated development environment (IDE) for multi-processor systems, product testing and applications engineering.

Rowen said Tensilica's processors were key components in system-on-chip (SOC) designs among the world's top electronics companies including Cisco Systems, LG Electronics, Olympus and Seiko Epson among others.
