Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) today kicked-off consultations on mobile number portability which intended to allow subscribers to retain their number even if they swap operators.

In most service areas in India, subscribers have the choice of operators. But, the subscriber's inability to retain the telephone number when changing an operator was an obstacle to competition, Trai said in a consultation paper.

"Mobile number portability (MNP) will benefit subscribers, increase the level of competition, and reward operators with the best customer service, coverage and service quality," it said. The regulator has sought the views of stakeholders by August 30.

The service providers, however, are not prepared immediately to implement the MNP. The consultation paper has pointed out certain technical, operational and economic issues, and international precedents.

"India can learn from the experience of countries where number portability has been implemented. But, some specific issues in the Indian context, such as ensuring tariff-transparency and amending the national numbering plan will need careful consideration," Trai said.
