TrueCaller, a popular application that identifies the caller's identity, has launched Truemessenger, which will extend the utility to text messages as well. The Sweden-based company, which has over 50% of its 150 million users in India, has decided to launch the application exclusively in India first, which will be followed up by a worldwide launch globally in the next few weeks. The company said that the application will put a name to a number on the SMS messages and automatically filter out spam and identify promotional messages.

“Today’s messaging apps are under constant attack from spammers and surrounded by uncertainty, but when we communicate via email for instance, our email app shows you the sender's name and filters out spam messages for you, but SMS has lacked these essential components - until today,” said Alan Mamedi, CEO & co-founder of Truecaller. “With Truemessenger we’ve reimagined the SMS app experience by making it more social and putting control back into the users’ hands so they  always know who they are communicating with.” While the application is available on Android and Windows, it is yet to debut on the Apple platform.

Kari Krishnamurthy, VP, Growth and Partnerships, Asia and Country Manager, Truecaller, India added that the application in no way will compromise the privacy of users by reading their messages. the company is also looking at some monetising options by end of the year. "For now, we are focussed on growth," added Krishnamurthy.
