Think of an office where you can sit next to your chief executive officer- a seamless office sans cubicles and partition walls; a workplace where there are no assigned sitting positions, not even for the boss.

Few can even dream of such a work ambience and the concept may even be dismissed by seasoned HR guys as downright utopian. But that is exactly what Uninor offers to its workforce- the one asset which is treasured the most by one of the latest entrants into the Indian cellular market.

This refreshing work culture has been introduced by Telenor, the Norwegian mobile operator which holds 67.25 per cent stake in Uninor, the remaining being held by Unitech Wireless.

“At Uninor, we believe in safeguarding human worth. A non-discriminatory and respectful attitude towards customers, colleagues and wider society will be the hallmark of our approach”, says Akash Das, executive vice president (Kolkata hub) of Uninor.

“We create a dynamic, unique work environment that empowers and engages people, encourages team-building, innovation, knowledge transfer and personal growth”, he adds.

Uninor has four values that serve as the beacon light for its day-to-day operations- Make it Easy, Keep Promises, Be Inspiring and Be Respectful. Everyday, each individual faces choices in work. Each individual is encouraged to make one's own choices and find out the best approach to work.

“All our employees rigorously adhere to the Telenor Vision, values and the code of conduct. We believe that working the “Telenor Way” helps create sustainable growth for businesses, individuals and societies. It enhances our company’s reputation, improves our results and creates a distinctive platform for us to communicate with the world”, claimed Das.

People and not technology, are at the core of Uninor's strategy. The company pursues its ambitious goals by putting people first in every aspect of its business. Some of the elements in the Telenor Way are legal requirements. Others are guiding principles that should direct and inspire.

The company also has in place an e-feedback system through which a feedback is taken for newly joined employees.

To ensure that its employees stay updated on the emerging trends as well as technologies, Uninor has training programmes at all levels- from the top to the bottom of the rung. The company offers training on IT-enabled services as well as soft skills and the training needs are identified through the Performance Management System.

Other different types of leadership training programmes like the Telenor development programmes, group exchange programme, value workshops, internal brand building for the employees are regularly conducted across functions and departments.
