UK-based Vodafone announced on Friday it had sent its final reply on the $2-billion (Rs 9,200 crore) tax case with the Income Tax Department of India. The department had sent a showcause notice to Vodafone on October 31, 2009, seeking the tax on the latter’s $11.2 billion deal of 2007 to buy a 67 per cent stake in Hutchison Essar.
Vodafone had given a reply with 23 annexures on January 29 this year. On Friday, they made a final reply, with a 24th annexure. “Vodafone is confident that no tax is payable... All of the taxation and legal advice we have received remains consistent with this view,” its spokesperson said.
