Victim's friend apprehended in Durgapur rape case, total arrests at 6

Police on Tuesday evening arrested a friend of the medical student of a private college, who was allegedly raped in West Bengal's Durgapur, taking the total number of arrests in the case to six, a senior police officer said. The accused had accompanied the victim when she had gone outside the campus of the medical college to fetch food on the evening of the alleged crime, he said.

Gangster linked to Rohit Godara-Goldy Brar syndicate detained in US

The Rajasthan Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) has tracked and facilitated the detention of fugitive gangster Amit Sharma alias Jack Pandit in the United States, an officer said on Tuesday. Sharma, a key operative of the Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar syndicate, was detained due to coordinated inputs shared by the AGTF with the CBI's Interpol Branch, which alerted American agencies through a Red Corner Notice, Additional Director General of Police (Crime/AGTF) Dinesh M N said.

MCD allocates ₹12.5 crore for sanitation drive during festival season, 50 new LED lights per ward

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Tuesday sanctioned Rs 12.5 crore for a special festival sanitation and repair drive across the Capital. The decision was announced at the civic body's monthly general house meeting. Odisha govt to launch scheme to empower women drivers

The Odisha government will launch a scheme to promote gender equality by empowering women drivers and supporting them with entrepreneurship opportunities, a state minister said on Tuesday. The state government aims to empower 1,100 women under the Atmanirbhar Mahila Su Vahak' over a period of four years, Transport and Commerce Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena told reporters here.

Ex-VVCMC commissioner used bribe to buy expensive sarees, invest in wife's residential project: ED

The ED on Tuesday alleged that IAS officer Anil Pawar generated Rs 169 crore worth "proceeds of crime" from bribes and utilised this amount to purchase gold, diamond and "expensive" sarees apart from investing in a residential project in the name of his wife. Pawar, a former Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) Commisioner, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in July, along with three others, as part of a money laundering investigation.

Two more Assamese expats from Singapore appear before CID in Zubeen death case

Two more Assamese expats, who were present during the dying moments of cultural icon Zubeen Garg in Singapore last month, appeared before the Assam Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday, which is probing the death of the singer, a top officer said. So far, seven Assamese NRIs living in the Southeast Asian nation have deposed before the investigating agency here, with four more who have been issued summonses by the CID yet to appear.

US, Malayasia work to expand Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire in advance of Asean summit

Malaysia and the US are facilitating efforts to secure an expanded ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia that they hope will be signed during a Southeast Asian summit later this month, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said on Tuesday. Thailand and Cambodia engaged in five days of combat in late July that killed dozens of people and displaced more than 260,000.

The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday conducted multi-state searches as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged bank loan fraud of Rs 70 crore. Around four premises each in Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Mumbai are being searched under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.

Case against MNS students' wing members for storming ABVP office in Pune

Police have registered a case against some members of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) students' wing after they allegedly barged into the ABVP's office following a dispute over posters at a college in Pune city, officials said. The accused allegedly tried to create a ruckus by locking the office of the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Sadashiv Peth area on Monday afternoon, they said. According to the police, some posters with the message to "boycott" MNS students' wing were put up at some places in the Wadia College.
