The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed all food business operators to immediately stop using the word 'ORS' (Oral Rehydration Solution) in their labelling and advertisements, calling such practices misleading to consumers. In its October 14 order, the food safety regulator clarified that the use of the term "ORS" in trademarked names or in the naming of any food products - even when accompanied by a prefix or suffix - constitutes a violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The latest order withdraws earlier directives issued in July 2022 and February 2024 that had permitted use of the term 'ORS' on food labels, subject to a declaration or warning stating that "the product is not an ORS formula as recommended by WHO". After reviewing the matter, FSSAI concluded that such practices are misleading to consumers through "false, deceptive, ambiguous and erroneous names/label declarations" and are in contravention of the Act. AWL Agri Business Ltd, which sells cooking oils and other food items, is expecting more than 10 per cent growth in its revenue this fiscal against Rs 63,672.24 crore in FY25 on better consumer demand, a top company official said. AWL Agri Business Ltd, formerly Adani Wilmar Ltd, sells edible oils and food products under the Fortune brand. Recently, the company acquired two big brands, Kohinoor and Tops. In an interview with PTI, AWL Agri Business Ltd Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Angshu Mallick said the revenue of the edible oil business and FMCG would grow in the current 2025-26 fiscal. "We did around Rs 63,000 crore last fiscal. We will surely grow more than 10 per cent in value terms," he said, replying to a query on revenue outlook, factoring in good monsoon rains and rationalisation of GST rates. Cocoa or green tea could counter the negative effects of high-fat food which tend to worsen during times of stress, a new study has found. Researchers said that food choices made while feeling stressed can influence how stress impacts heart health. The team from the University of Birmingham, UK, found that while high-fat foods can negatively affect the function of blood vessels and oxygen reaching the brain, flavanol-rich cocoa and green tea can protect vascular function (vessels) during periods of everyday stress. "We took a group of young healthy adults and gave them two butter croissants with 10 grams salted butter, 1.5 slices of cheddar cheese and 250 millilitres whole milk as breakfast and either a high-flavanol cocoa or a low-flavanol cocoa drink," first author Rosalind Baynham, University of Birmingham, explained. Food regulator FSSAI has made it mandatory for foreign food manufacturing facilities to register with it for exporting products such as meat, milk and infant foods to India. This will be effective from February 1, 2023. In an order issued on Monday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said that it has been decided that registrations of foreign food manufacturing facilities, falling under five food categories, who are intended to export these products shall be mandatory. These categories are milk and milk products; meat and meat products, including poultry, fish and their products; egg powder; infant food; and nutraceuticals. The FSSAI has requested all competent authorities of exporting countries to provide the list of existing manufacturers and those who are intended to export these food products to India. Based on information provided by them, the FSSAI will register these facilities on its portal.
