A high-speed train derailed, jumped onto the track in the opposite direction and slammed into an oncoming train Sunday in southern Spain, killing at least 20 people and injuring dozens more, officials said. The evening train between Malaga and Madrid went off the rails near Cordoba and slammed into a train coming from Madrid to Huelva, another southern Spanish city, according to rail operator Adif. The two trains were carrying around 500 passengers, according to media reports. Antonio Sanz, regional health minister for the Andalusia region where the crash happened, said officials told him they fear the death toll may rise above 20. Rescue operations are ongoing, he said, adding that 73 injured passengers have been taken to six different hospitals. He said at least one passenger carriage had rolled down a four-metre slope. Eastern Railway saved electrical energy worth over Rs 12 crore in the first quarter of 2024-25 by using comprehensive measures to save traction and non-traction energy, an official said on Monday. He said that through the regeneration of energy by three-phase locomotives, the Kolkata-headquartered ER saved 1,09,84,814 units of energy, amounting to savings of approximately Rs 8.06 crore in the first quarter of the current financial year. Comprehensive measures to reduce use of traction and non-traction energy led to reducing its carbon footprint and saving electrical energy worth over Rs 12 crore in the first quarter of 2024-25 fiscal, ER spokesperson Kausik Mitra said. The minimum ticket price to travel on Amrit Bharat Express trains for a destination within one km to 50 km is Rs 35, exclusive of the reservation fee and other charges, the Railway Board has informed all zones. It has issued a circular on the fare structure of Amrit Bharat trains and attached a "Fare Table" with the distance slabs and ticket prices for second-class and sleeper-class passengers. As the first Amrit Bharat train, which will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh on December 30, has only second-class and sleeper-class compartments, the railway ministry is yet to work out the fare table for the air-conditioned classes, sources said.
