NCRB data shows lower crime rate than national average in UP: State Police

Despite Uttar Pradesh having the highest population in the country, the crime rate in the state in 2023 stood at 181.3, much below the national crime rate of 270.3, the state police said on Wednesday, quoting the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 16.98 per cent of the total population in the country. Crime rate, defined as the number of crimes per one lakh population, is considered the most reliable indicator for assessing a state's law and order situation, as it adjusts for population size and growth, the state police said in a statement. An analysis showed that Uttar Pradesh ranks favourably across various crime heads. For total crimes reported under the Indian Penal Code, the state was placed 20th among the 28 states and eight Union Territories. Mumbai records highest economic fraud cases among metros in 2023: NCRB

Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, topped the list of metropolitan cities in economic offences with 6,476 such cases registered in 2023, as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. However, as compared to the number of economic offences Mumbai reported in 2022, it saw a dip in such cases in 2023. While it reported 5,671 and 6,960 such cases in 2021 and 2022, respectively, the figure came down by 484 cases in 2023 compared to the previous year, the data showed. Out of these cases, the police have filed chargesheets in 37.9 per cent of cases, the report mentioned. In the list of metropolitan cities, Mumbai was followed by Hyderabad with 5,728 cases of economic offences registered, whereas Jaipur occupied the third spot with 5,304 such cases. Maharashtra tops abetment of suicide cases in 2023, murder cases fall: NCRB

Maharashtra topped in recording abetment of suicide cases across the country with 1,389 offences in which 1,480 people died in 2023, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. Madhya Pradesh was on the second spot with 1,153 abetment of suicide cases in which 1,211 persons killed themselves, while Uttar Pradesh was on the third spot with 1,075 cases and 1,186 victims, data in the report showed. As per the data published by the New Delhi-headquartered NCRB, a Union home ministry unit, Maharashtra was on the second spot with 5,96,103 cases in 2023, which included offences registered under the IPC (replaced by BNS in July 2024) and special local laws (SLLs). 450K crimes against women recorded in 2023, UP saw highest cases: NCRB

Close to 4.5 lakh crimes against women were reported in 2023, up marginally from the previous two years, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. A total of 4,48,211 crimes against women were reported in 2023, an increase from 4,45,256 cases in 2022 and 4,28,278 in 2021 The figures, compiled from police records in states and union territories, indicate a national crime rate of 66.2 incidents per lakh female population, based on mid-year projected female population estimates of 6,770 lakh. The overall chargesheeting rate for these cases stood at 77.6 per cent in 2023. Among states, Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of cases at 66,381, followed by Maharashtra at 47,101, Rajasthan at 45,450, West Bengal at 34,691 and Madhya Pradesh at 32,342. Dip in murders; cybercrimes, crimes against STs spiked: NCRB 2023

India recorded 27,721 cases of murder in 2023, less by 2.8 per cent from 2022, while crimes against Scheduled Tribes rose by a staggering 28 per cent during the same period, latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau has revealed. Cybercrimes saw a 31.2 per cent increase with 86,420 cases, as compared to 65,893 reported in 2022, it said. The national record keeper of crimes and trends revealed that 28,522 cases of murder were reported in India in 2022, which came down to 27,721 cases in 2023, a dip of 2.8 per cent. "'Disputes' (9,209 cases) was the motive in the highest number of murder cases during 2023, followed by 'Personal Vendetta or Enmity' (3,458 cases) and 'Gain' (1,890 cases)," the report said. Crimes against Scheduled Tribes saw a jump of 28.8 per cent from 10,064 cases in 2022 to 12,960 cases in 2023, it said. 275 cases of rape in custody registered during 2017-22: NCRB data

More than 270 cases of rape in custody were registered from 2017 till 2022, according to NCRB data, with women rights activists attributing such instances to lack of sensitisation and accountability within law enforcement systems. NDRF developing app, national plan to bring down number of drowning deaths

Drowning accounts for more than 100 deaths per day or about 38,000 fatal casualties in a year in the country and the NDRF has decided to minimise these incidents by preparing a national contingency plan and a mobile app, a senior officer said Friday. 2022 saw over 31% rise in offences promoting enmity between groups: NCRB

More than 1,500 cases were registered under IPC section 153A that penalises promoting enmity between different groups, including offences of hate speech, across India in 2022, a 31.25 per cent increase from 2021 but a 15.57 per cent decline from 2020, according to the NCRB. Last year, the maximum of these 1,523 cases were lodged in Uttar Pradesh (217) followed by Rajasthan (191), Maharashtra (178), Tamil Nadu (146), Telangana (119), Andhra Pradesh (109), and Madhya Pradesh (108), the data showed. Telangana logs 15,297 cybercrime cases in 2022, highest in India: NCRB

Telangana registered 15,297 cybercrime cases in 2022, the highest in the country, according to the latest NCRB data. Cybercrime in the state has been on an upward trajectory, with 5,024 cases in 2020 and 10,303 in 2021, according to an analysis of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. The data showed that among the 28 states, Telangana logged the highest number of cybercrime cases, followed by Karnataka with 12,556 and Uttar Pradesh with 10,117 in 2022. The 28 states recorded a cumulative 64,907 cybercrime cases last year. The rate of total cybercrime cases per lakh population in Telangana stood at 40.3 while the percentage of cases for which a charge sheet was filed was 17.1, according to the data. There were 624 cases of ATM frauds, 3,223 online banking frauds, 2,179 OTP frauds, 4,467 cheating frauds, 280 cyber stalking and 234 cyber blackmailing/threatening. The motive in 10,991 cases was fraud followed by extortion with 447, the data revealed.
