Toyota moves further into partnership for 2026 with Haas Formula 1 team

The Haas Formula 1 team will get a new name next season, further showcasing its relationship with Japanese automaker Toyota. In a statement Thursday, the team said its name in 2026 will be TGR Haas F1 Team. The TGR stands for Toyota Gazoo Racing, which is the racing division of the Toyota Motor Corporation. Taking over the title sponsorship means Toyota is now more involved in F1 than at any time since it pulled its team out after the 2009 season. Haas and Toyota entered into the first stages of this technical partnership a year ago and the Haas car has been carrying Toyota's branding since. The partnership involves design and technical services but does not include a Toyota engine. Haas will run next year with Ferrari power, but it does move the company ever deeper into Formula 1. Toyota ran a team in F1 until the end of the 2009 season. It failed to win a race despite spending heavily. This move does not appear to mark a return to that level of involvement. It's naturally a ..

Toyota posts strong sales but remains cautious on profit amid rising costs

Japan's top automaker Toyota reported record sales for the fiscal year through March on Thursday, but its profit for the latest quarter faltered partly because of a certification scandal. Toyota Motor Corp.'s January-March net profit totalled 664.6 billion yen (USD 4.6 billion), down from 997.6 billion yen the same period a year ago. Quarterly sales totalled 12.36 trillion yen (USD 85.9 billion), up from 11 trillion yen. Toyota has been strengthening the testing system of its vehicles after acknowledging wide-ranging fraudulent testing, including the use of inadequate or outdated data in crash tests, incorrect testing of airbag inflation and engine power checks. Akio Toyoda, Toyota's chairman and the grandson of the automaker's founder, has apologised. The wrongdoing did not affect the safety of vehicles already on roads, which include the popular Corolla subcompact and Lexus luxury vehicles. But the scandal has been a major embarrassment for a manufacturer whose brand has been ...

Toyota announces EV, battery push in China, US as quarterly profit surges

Toyota is developing and making electric vehicles and EV batteries in China, the Japanese automaker said Wednesday, under a new partnership with the Shanghai government. Toyota Motor Corp. also announced it will start producing batteries for EVs, hybrids and plug-ins at a new USD 14 billion facility in North Carolina, with shipping starting for North American models in April. The moves highlight Toyota's aggressive push in electric cars, a sector where some critics have said it's fallen behind rivals like Tesla and BYD at a time when the Chinese EV market is booming and the world's concerns about sustainability are increasingly crucial. Toyota is setting up a company in Jinshan district in southwest Shanghai for that effort, with production of the new Lexus EVs starting in 2027. Initial production capacity there totals 100,000 vehicles a year, which will create about 1,000 jobs, the world's top automaker said. The battery plant in the US will create some 5,000 jobs, according to ..
